Junior johnson driver neil bonnett passed his teammate darrell. he was joined by neil bonnett, a rising star from alabama whose potential was easily recognized by johnson. It was bonnett, in fact, who took the checkered flag. bonnett won 18 winston cup races before the 1990 crash at the darlington international speedway in south carolina, in which he suffered severe head injuries. neil bonnett joined him in 1984 in a matching chevrolet after spending a transition year in 1983 with rahmoc racing and 'sponsorship' by hodgdon.
